How to jump rope properly: technique basics

The rope does the work, the wrists turn it, and your feet leave the floor only just enough to let it pass.

Key points

  • Hop 2–3 cm, land on the balls of your feet.
  • Turn from the wrists with elbows close to the ribs.
  • Look at the wall, not your feet.

Good skipping looks lazy. The rope does the work, the wrists turn it, and the feet leave the floor only just enough to let it pass.

The basic bounce, step by step

  1. Stance. Feet hip-width or closer, weight on the balls of the feet, knees soft, chest up, eyes forward.
  2. Hands. Elbows close to the ribs, hands slightly in front of the hips and a little wider than the body, about at hip height.
  3. Turn. Start with the rope behind your heels. Turn it with small circles of the wrists and forearms, not big shoulder swings.
  4. Hop. Jump about 2 to 3 cm off the floor, just enough to clear the rope. Land softly on the balls of your feet, heels hovering or just kissing the floor.
  5. Rhythm. One hop per turn. Many beginners do a small double bounce (two hops per turn); it is fine for the first week but switch to single bounces as soon as you can, because it builds timing.

Five common mistakes and the fix

MistakeWhat happensFix
Jumping too highTires you out in seconds, hard landingsThink "hop", not "jump". Try skipping under a low ceiling in your mind.
Turning from the shouldersRope slows, arms burn, timing driftsPin the elbows to your sides; practise side swings with wrists only.

Hands drifting apart or forwardRope shortens and hits your feetKeep hands at hip height, just outside the hips.

Drills to learn the timing

  • Rope-free hops: 3 × 30 seconds of small hops while making the wrist circles with no rope.
  • Single-handle side swing: hold both handles in one hand, swing at your side and hop each time the rope hits the floor.
  • One-at-a-time: swing the rope over, jump it, stop. Repeat 20 times, then try to link two, then five.

Breathing

Breathe steadily through the nose and mouth; do not hold your breath to concentrate. If you cannot breathe in rhythm, slow the rope down. Pace is far less important than consistency in the first month.
